How Long Does a Hangover Last? What Changes It, and What an IV Does and Does Not Do

Most hangovers ease within about 24 hours, and a heavy night can run longer. What changes how the day goes, what a hangover IV does about the fluid side of it, and the signs that mean it is not a hangover.

The short answer: most hangovers peak around the time your blood alcohol returns to zero and ease within about 24 hours; a heavy night can run longer. The biggest factor is how much you drank; sleep, food and how much water went in alongside it change how the day feels. Nothing on our menu makes that clock run faster, and this page says so before anything about what we sell.

Read this first: when it is not a hangover

If symptoms feel worse than a hangover (severe headache that won't ease, repeated vomiting, vomiting blood or what looks like coffee grounds, severe belly pain, chest pain or a racing or irregular heartbeat, confusion, stiff neck, high fever, or any head injury while drinking), seek emergency care. Do not wait for a mobile IV visit. If someone cannot be woken, is breathing slowly or irregularly, has a seizure, is vomiting while not fully awake, or has cold, pale or bluish skin, that can be alcohol poisoning: call 911, and turn them on their side while you wait. An IV is elective wellness care and we are not a substitute for emergency care.

What an IV does about it

A hangover IV puts fluids and electrolytes into a vein, so they do not depend on a stomach that is already unhappy. The Hangover Drip is $259 and contains IV fluids, electrolytes, vitamin B-complex, vitamin B12, glutathione, magnesium, nausea relief and pain relief. The pain relief is a prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory; it is not right for everyone: blood thinners, kidney disease, a stomach ulcer or bleeding history, or vomiting blood means it is left out, and the Nurse Practitioner reviews it against your medication list before it is given.

What it does not do is shorten the hangover. How quickly you feel different varies and we have not measured it, so we do not promise a time. The bag runs about an hour once the line is placed, and the fluids and nausea relief go into your bloodstream directly rather than waiting on an upset stomach.

If you only want the fluids, the Hydration Drip at $139 is a liter of sterile fluid with electrolytes and nothing else.

When drinking water is enough

For most people, most of the time, drinking works, it is free, and it is what we tell you to do first. If you can keep water down and the day ahead is clear, water and rest will get you there. Water has to be absorbed through the gut first, which slows down when you are nauseous or vomiting, and that is the situation an IV is for.

Read this before you book if any of these apply

Anyone 17 or younger. No exceptions, and a parent's consent does not change it.
Pregnancy. Possible, but your obstetric provider signs off on elective IV hydration before the visit, so tell us before you book.
Heart failure, significant heart or valve disease, kidney disease or dialysis. A bag of fluid is a real volume load and the right answer may be less, or none. Tell us before you book.
Anyone 60 or older. IV fluid volume is capped at one liter every two weeks with no extra-fluid add-ons, so mention your age range when you book.
Anyone taking a water pill, lithium, an ACE inhibitor or ARB, metformin, an SGLT2 medication or a blood thinner. All of these change what is safe when you are dehydrated. Bring the list.
Anyone on chemotherapy, steroids or medication that suppresses the immune system. Any fever needs urgent medical review, not a drip.

One addition for this drip: tell us before you book about any blood thinner, kidney disease or stomach ulcer, and about any ibuprofen, naproxen or aspirin taken today, because of the anti-inflammatory in the bag. We do not place a line in someone who is still intoxicated, and the intake asks. Book once you are sober, and do not drive until you are sure you are no longer over the limit.

How a visit works

You book a time and a licensed nurse comes to your home, hotel or rental. Every visit includes a Good Faith Exam with a Nurse Practitioner: on-site when she administers your IV, or by brief video check-in beforehand when a Registered Nurse does. It is a screen before treatment, not a diagnosis. The bag runs about an hour once the line is placed. It is $259 flat. Travel is included across most of our service area.
